SOG, RR Killed 8 militant’s in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar: Eight militants, one policeman on Friday were killed and five people, including a civilian were injured in the ongoing encounters in Ganderbal and Kupwara districts of the Valley. Reports and eyewitnesses told Press Bureau of India that a joint party of Army’s 24 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group (SOG) last evening cordoned off Chak, Akhal village in Kangan area following reports about the presence of militants. As the joint team started combing operation, the militants hiding in the residential house of Wali Mohammad Bhat opened a volley of gunfire on the search team. The joint team returned the fire sparking off fierce encounter. In the exchange of fire that continued for some time one SOG man was injured. The injured SOG constable identified as Omkar Sigh (264/AP8th) was rushed to hospital for treatment. The search party suspended the operation due to darkness. However, the house where the militant was holed up remained under siege. Early morning, joint team launched an assault to flush out the holed up militants. The Army fired mortars towards the house resulting in the death of a militant. The identity of the slain militant is however, unclear. After razing the house to ground, reports said Army went close to the site where they came under heavy gunfire from the militants. In the fresh exchange of fire, two militants were killed. One civilian identified as Fayaz Ahmad, son of Ghulam Qadir of Akhal was injured in the encounter. The injured man who has suffered bullet in chest was rushed to hospital for treatment. A RR soldier, Asrar Ahmad was also injured in the firing, they said. Intermittent exchange of fire was going on when the last reports came in. Five militants were killed and an Army officer was injured in the encounter that raged along the Line of Control (LoC) in Macchil sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district last evening. Reports and officials said that a group of more than seven militants were confronted by Army’s 8 Dogra and 45 Rashtriya Rifles in Ringballa area of Macchil sector near the Line of Control (LoC). In the ensuing gun battle, five militants were killed while an officer sustained injured. The identity of slain militants is being ascertained. The injured officer identified as Major Manoj Kumar has been shifted to 92 Base hospital. Srinagar based, Army Spokesman, J S Brar said that eight militants were killed in two ongoing encounters between Army and militants in Kangan and Macchil sector of the Kupwara district. One Army man, he said was also injured as Army foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC. “The encounters are in progress,” he added.
